Panchayat elections in West Bengal now 35 people died in violence till advertisement

Kolkata /  At least 35 people have been killed in post-poll violence since the announcement of panchayat elections in West Bengal. Unbridled violence was witnessed in various parts of the state on Saturday during the three-tier panchayat polls as the death toll rose to 17 after the polls. Those killed included activists owing allegiance to both the ruling Trinamool Congress and the opposition.

The maximum number of nine Trinamool Congress workers, including one candidate, were killed, while two each of the opposition Congress and Communist Party of India-Marxist Bharatiya Janata Party and another voter fell victim to violence during polling. Two Trinamool Congress workers lost their lives in the post-poll violence in Malda and South 24 Parganas. Thus, the number of Trinamool workers killed in the elections and the violence that followed has risen to 11.

Murshidabad district was the center of election violence. Apart from this, Malda, North Dinajpur and Cooch Behar besides Nadia and North and South 24 Parganas were affected by violent incidents. On Saturday, while returning from election duty, a DSP rank officer was also attacked, in which he was seriously injured. With this, the total number of people killed since the announcement of the date for the panchayat elections has gone up to 35. Congress MP Adhir Chowdhary died when he was addressing media persons.
