India's first indigenous nuclear power reactor started operation in Gujarat, 700 MW capacity

New Delhi/ India's first indigenously developed 700 MW nuclear power reactor at the Kakrapar Atomic Power Project (KAPP) in Gujarat began commercial operation on Friday. A senior officer gave this information.

A senior KAPP official said that it is a matter of great pleasure to inform that our first indigenous 700 MW unit at KAPP-3 has been commissioned on 30 June 2023. Presently the unit is working at 90 per cent of its total power.

The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) is building two 700 MW Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors (PHWR) at Kakrapar, along with two 220 MW power plants.

NPCIL plans to build sixteen 700 MW PHWRs across the country and has given financial and administrative approval for 700 MW at Rawatbhata (RAPS 7 & 8) in Rajasthan and Gorakhpur (GHAVP 1 & 2) in Haryana.

Construction of nuclear power plants is underway. The government has set up four other locations namely Gorakhpur in Haryana, Sadi Sada in Chatkayasthan in Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka
