The Burden of Disease due to Unsafe Drinking Water, Sanitation and Hygiene report has revealed that half of the world's population still struggles with access to clean drinking water and sanitation. Globally, 771 million people lack access to clean water and 1.7 billion people do not have access to a toilet. Diarrhoea, acute respiratory infections, undernutrition and soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH) are taking a toll on children. Praising India's cleanliness campaign, the United Nations had said that children have benefited the most from this campaign. The number of deaths of children under 5 years of age in India has come down to about 8 lakhs, which was about 10 lakhs 2 years ago. Clean drinking water, hand washing, food security, use of toilets and freedom from open defecation are the many reasons, due to which the number of child deaths is continuously decreasing.
